We are sad to report the death at the age of 89 of Peter Mockridge, a stalwart of Wiltshire tennis from the 1950s to the 1970s. The starting point of his tennis career was the old Swindon Hard Courts club, which under the inspiring leadership of Bob Clanchy was the training ground for many of the county’s promising young players.
Peter played for Wiltshire at County Week, often in partnership with Geoff Owen or Basil,Hutchins, for more than twenty years, and he had an outstanding record. With his powerful service and very strong forehand he was a formidable right court player. He was a member of the team that reached the dizzy heights of Group One in 1961. He was also a notable table tennis player
He moved from Swindon to Birmingham in the 1970s and became an active member of the Edgbaston Priory tennis club. He played for the Warwickshire veterans for many years. He was also a member of the All England Club and of the International Club and went on many of their overseas tours. He will be remembered, not just for his playing skills, but for his unfailing sense of humour and good spirits – a huge asset to any team he played for, a great friend and colleague.
The committee of the Wiltshire LTA send their deep condolences to Peter’s family.
Geoffrey Owen, President of the Wiltshire LTA.
