2023 Award Winners

Each year, the LTA Tennis Awards highlight the incredible achievements and contributions of people across Britain.
Launched in 2015 with the help of former LTA president Cathie Sabin OBE, the awards recognise the many thousands of inspirational individuals involved in tennis, dedicating their precious time and energy; 25,000 volunteers, 4,672 coaches and 975 officials. They also highlight the incredible achievements of some 22,000 schools, 2,768 clubs and over 9,276 LTA approved tournaments. The contribution of these individuals and venues helps to bring fans and players closer to the game we all love.
Winners are judged from over 2,000 public nominations and are first judged by 38 County Associations, resulting in 380 County award winners who are then put forward for Regional awards. Finally, the Regional winners are put forward for the National LTA Tennis Awards alongside winners from Tennis Wales and Tennis Scotland.
In addition to the LTA Awards Wiltshire Tennis also awards for contributions and efforts in additional categories.

This years awards was hosted by Bechtle in Chippenham our thanks to James Napp and his colleagues for putting on a fantastic evening.

LTA Awards

Club of the Year

RIVERSIDE TENNIS CLUB

Riverside Tennis Club is based in the South of the County and has around 200 adult members and 220 juniors.

The club have four artificial grass and four hard courts all of which  are floodlit resulting in an all year-round extensive programme for all ages and abilities.

The Club have installed a Wingfield Net primarily for coaching purposes but also a great resource for the membership.

The Coaching team provide many popular activities including Cardio Tennis, Tennis Express, Team Practices, Intermediate Adults and a Ladies morning as well as 26 group lessons for juniors.

The club is known for its positive and inclusive environment and have sessions for players with learning disabilities, taster sessions for players in wheelchairs and also a session for players suffering from Parkinson’s. They also run walking tennis sessions.

They offer many competitive opportunities running 36 adult and junior teams in local and county leagues.

DEVELOPMENT COACH OF THE YEAR

CRAIG LOXTON
SWINDON TENNIS

Craig has built up an excellent programme at his centre and goes above and beyond to design and deliver innovative coaching sessions.

He exhibits exceptional teamwork and leadership skills, demonstrating a strong commitment to personal development while effectively mentoring and developing other coaches and leaders.

He always demonstrates outstanding customer service and goes that extra mile for all the customers.

He coaches a weekly Open Door disability group, giving all different backgrounds/disabilities a chance to play and enjoy tennis.

He has been Head Coach for the last 8 years and has been the central figure in developing the community facility with over 500 players having access to the courts and 255 players currently on the coaching programme.

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

ROGER HENRY
RAMSBURY TENNIS CLUB

Roger has been a stalwart of his club for well over forty of its fifty years existence, playing a pivotal role in growing the club to its present seven courts, across three playing surfaces with over 400 members, including some 120 juniors.

He has made an outstanding contribution across a broad range of activities, as a committee member, long-standing chairman, player, coach, junior co-ordinator and ever willing all-round helper.

He has been a champion of increasing participation in tennis throughout his time with the club. As well as acting as coach himself, he has led the development of the club’s coaching programme over many years.

He has also been involved with Wiltshire Tennis for well over 40 years. Firstly, as a ‘Green Shield’ coach before joining the Junior committee and being a founder member of the Wiltshire Tennis Coaching Association.

His current role is the County Tennis Chairman and his knowledge and enthusiasm for County Tennis and in particular junior activities is unrivalled.

He is an incredible role model and his achievements at Ramsbury Tennis Club and Wiltshire Tennis are remarkable. The club and County would not be where it is today without his many years of dedicated service.

OFFICIAL OF THE YEAR

Sam Kingdon

Sam has formed a very good working relationship with the coaches and clubs across the County.

She has helped increase participation in tournaments throughout the county including the County Championships, Team Tennis and Schools Competitions.

She has actively supported clubs to hold their own grade 3 competitions in the county to give more opportunities for players.

She referees the tournaments to a very high standard and is very welcoming to players and parents.

She is firm but fair and runs tournaments with a smile and a caring demeanour.

She shows a real empathy with the players and one parent said ‘She is a true star and role model to all’.

PARK VENUE OF THE YEAR

SWINDON TENNIS

This Park offers different memberships including an Annual Pass for householders, Club Pass and Pay and Play.

They aim to make tennis easily accessible with low charges, professional organisation and engaging activities for the local community. 

Their focus is to promote tennis throughout the year for all age groups, both adults and children, through social play, internal competition, matches, and coaching.

They have a great coaching team and have sessions to accommodate the needs of any adult or junior player.

This venue also has a weekly Open Door Disability Group and on the back of this session, those players now regularly go for more tennis or meet up with each other in the coffee shop.

This Park has 10 floodlit tennis courts and 4x floodlit mini courts.

PERFORMANCE COACH OF THE YEAR

ALI WARD
ROYAL WOOTTON BASSETT Tennis Club

Ali is a truly outstanding role model.

He is professional at all times and coaches with total honesty and integrity.

From attending further up-skilling and coaching different groups, he is always striving to be the best coach and person he can be and therefore empowering the people he coaches to be the same.

He coaches a weekly wheelchair tennis group at his club and is coaching a junior wheelchair player who won his first international title in 2023.

He has previously coached one of the best GB Wheelchair players and helped them win multiple international titles, qualify for two Paralympic Games and Wimbledon.

He is Head Coach at Royal Wootton Bassett TC and heads up an extensive and varied tennis programme for all abilities.

PRESIDENTS AWARD

Pewsey Coaches’ 24-hour Rally Against Cancer

This award is presented by the LTA President Nationally later this year and Wiltshire have one nomination going forward to be judged.

Pewsey Tennis Club coaches Martin Wright and John Gregory organised and completed a 24-hour marathon tennis event at the club in April last year. The pair faced a new opposition pair every hour and played continuously for the 24 hours. Their aim was to play as many games as they could and to raise £2,000 in funds for Cancer Research UK.

The event drew more than 230 supporters to their JustGiving page, involved more than 150 supporters and participants on the day and ultimately raised £7,251 for the cancer charity.

RISING STAR AWARD

ANDREW
RAMSBURY TENNIS CLUB

Andrew is a participant in the LTA Young Person’s Welfare Ambassador project.

At 13 years old he is the youngest of the 25 Ambassadors and he’s thrown himself into the project with maximum enthusiasm and effort.

He has raised awareness of safeguarding among young players and helped promote a safe and inclusive tennis environment at his club.

He has created junior club days, created an action plan for his club aimed specifically at the younger players and also had the brilliant idea to run a Safeguarding quiz for the club’s 120 juniors.

In the company of other juniors of all ages, he engages with them with natural people skills.

He plays in the top ladder for his Club as well as for Wiltshire Tennis. However not only are his playing skills most impressive, what also really comes across is his manner and ever smiling face which radiates happiness to all those around him.

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR

ANDREW PAYNE
MARLBOROUGH Tennis Club

Andrew joined the Marlborough Tennis Club committee in 2018 to grow membership and improve communications. His energy and vision saw him elected Chair in 2021.

His clearly communicated vision and leadership will see the club end 2023 with 310 members and with a new £250,000 clubhouse under construction.

He has spearheaded the club’s sponsorship activity. Recognising potential sponsors would need to see a return for their investment, he designed an innovative Sponsorship Package that benefits the club and sponsors alike.

He has a passion for getting people on court playing tennis and wants Marlborough Tennis to be at the heart of the Community.

He recently supported Ukrainian refugees with free membership and coaching to help them integrate into the club and community.

Members describe this volunteer as “driven, transformative, creative, resourceful, dedicated, inspirational and supportive”.

OUTSTANDING PLAYER OF THE YEAR

WILLIAM BURRIDGE

WILLIAM BURRIDGE

William is 19 years of age and has represented Wiltshire all through the age groups. He is currently in America at College.

He made the semi-finals of LTA British Tour and 2 quarter finals. He also won 2 Men’s Grade 3 Doubles Tournament.

He won 11 out of 12 matches in the National Open Mens Club League winning all 6 single matches at the number 1 position.

He won 14 out of 15 matches at Summer County Cup with his doubles partner.

He obtained a scholarship to play Division 1 College Tennis at Drexel University and had 7 wins and 2 losses in single matches in Freshman fall season.

WILTSHIRE SPECIAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

BEN ROGERS

BEN ROGERS

Ben is the Inter-Services Singles and Doubles Champion.

He is the Army Tennis Association Singles and Doubles Champion.

Ben is in the top 50 ITF 35+ World Ranking and Top 5 UK 35+ National Ranking (selected for Four Nations and GB in 2024).

He won a Bronze medal at the European Senior Club Championships in Turkey and Gold Medals in Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles at the European Master Games in Finland.

He also won 14 out of 15 matches with his doubles partner for Wiltshire at the LTA Summer County Cup.

WILTSHIRE SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARD

JAMES ALLEN

JAMES ALLEN

James qualified as a Referee in autumn 2022.

He has had a very busy year of refereeing creating an enormous amount of competitive opportunities for players to compete in Wiltshire.

He has organised and refereed 40 Grade 4 and 5 county level tournaments at his club.

Many parents highlight his exceptional level of customer service and importantly puts the enjoyment and fun at the forefront of his events.

The impressive amount of refereeing this person has completed this year is particularly impressive for such a recently qualified Official.

WILTSHIRE MENS TEAM

This Team gained Promotion in both the Summer and Winter LTA County Cup Competitions in 2023 – the second consecutive promotion for the summer event.

12 players were involved in the County Cup events with many more just outside the squads showing the depth there is in Wiltshire Mens Tennis.

The whole squad contributed to the success but a special mention to two players William Burridge and Ben Rogers who won 14 out of 15 at the Summer County Cup.

The team is captained by Neil Watts and they are looking forward to another exciting year ahead for this team.
