Sunshine, Centre Court and a Sunday to Remember for Wiltshire’s Over 35s
Three days of glorious sunshine greeted the Wiltshire Women’s Over 35s team of Karina Weedon, Hannah Booth, Annabel Wade, Emma Morrell and Helen Benton as they took to the courts at Eastbourne for Division 5 of the County Cup. Friday brought a formidable West of Scotland side, with GB players who were a class act. Wiltshire battled hard from the first ball, pushing three of the rubbers all the way, but the strength of the opposition ultimately took its toll with a 5-0 result.
Saturday offered a day off from competition due a team withdrawing and the team made the most of it with a practice session on Centre Court. It was a rare treat at Eastbourne, on a court that has hosted so many top world players.
Sunday’s match against Cambridgeshire opened with two tough singles matches that we lost, leaving everything to play for in the remaining rubbers. Cue an outstanding display of doubles: Wiltshire swept all three rubbers to seal a tight and thoroughly deserved 3-2 victory, and a brilliant end to the weekend.
Second place in Division 5 caps a superb team effort. Huge congratulations to all five players, and a big thank you to the supporters who came along to cheer. Roll on next year, with Division 4 firmly in our sights!
