County Senior Teams

The Wiltshire Seniors Men’s County Teams have had one of their most successful years in the LTA 2025 Men’s Seniors County Cup, winning 11 out of 16 matches in 4 age groups – 5 at home and 6 away. The new Over 45s captained by Martyn Ledbury using 7 players won all their 4 matches and finished Champions of Division 2B, gaining promotion to the top division for 2026 – a great achievement! Regular weekly practices have continued to be held throughout the year at Swindon’s Delta Indoor Tennis Centre on Monday lunchtimes 12.00-2.00 and have been well-attended in both summer and winter months. This can give marginal home advantage in matches as our players are accustomed to the lighting and court surface. The Wiltshire Ladies O35’s team of Helen Benton, Sarah Hosking, Alexandra Melhuish, Emma Morrell and Karina Weedon gathered at Devonshire park on Friday evening for welcome drinks before the competition started the following day, the weather forecast was looking good!  Day 1 famous last words, we awoke to strong winds and sea mist. Wilts v Derbyshire, Alex was the first to play, with soft grass courts conditions were challenging to say the least. Wiltshire Ladies had their most promising set of results across the age groups during the 2023 Senior County championships, securing 2nd place for the Over 50s ,55s and 60s in their respective which should ensure promotions for 2024. The over 40s continuing to consolidate and develop as a team under Helen Benton, Capt, and had tight losses against Suffolk and Oxfordshire and a good 3-2 win away in Oxfordshire. Five teams were entered for 2023 with team captains Hans Monahan (M55) & Mike Powell (M75 non-playing) continuing in post, James Sinclair (moving from M65 to M70), and new captains Paul Williams (M60) & Andy Smith (M65).  Wilts M55 Played 4 matches in Group 2B under captain Hans Monahan, losing 0-5 to Herts (first) Berks (third) & Devon (fourth) but winning one rubber against Middx 1-4 (second). On Wednesday 21stJuly, our Wilts M75 team surpassed expectations against a strong Hampshire/Isle of Wight side which included two players selected recently for British National Teams to play in the World Championships ! On the longest day, it was perhaps appropriate that the match should last four hours from 12 noon ! Men’s Over 35’s A newly formed Wiltshire Men’s team met up in Eastbourne for the 2022 LTA Over 35’s County Cup in mid-August. The weather conditions were clear skies and challenging heat and the team were all excited for the battles ahead with Staffordshire, Cumbria and the Isle of Man. First up on the hottest day was Staffordshire who proved to be the strongest team in the division going through without losing a match. With Covid restrictions lifted, all the Senior Ladies teams were again out representing Wiltshire in their respective age groups over the summer. A well attended practice session at Delta centre in March saw us welcome new players into the fold and then , subsequently into squads. Individual team Captains held further sessions , and took on the task of organising their teams fixtures for the season.
