Wiltshire Tennis Celebrates it’s Centenary
1924 – 2024 Yesterday, May 10, Wiltshire Lawn Tennis Association celebrated its centenary with a special afternoon tea at Marlborough Golf Club. In honour of the occasion, Geoffrey Owen, President of the Wiltshire Lawn Tennis, has written a history tracing its early beginnings with just 10 clubs through the turbulent years of WW2 to the present day with 43 clubs. 50 Years of Wheelchair Tennis
The LTA and Getty Images are proud to celebrate 50 years of wheelchair tennis, with a digital exhibition of 50 images – some published for the first time. Created in 1976, by American Brad Parks, what began on public courts in California quickly gathered momentum. By the mid‑1980s, international tournaments were being staged, the World Team Cup had been launched, and the ITF had formally recognised wheelchair tennis. Obituary – Norene Richardson
15th March 1939 – 23rd March 2026 A stalwart of tennis in Wiltshire, we recently heard the sad news that Norene had died. Her funeral service was held at St Mary’s Church, Purton on 6th May, followed by a celebration of her life at North Wiltshire Crematorium and Basset Down Golf Club. Representatives of all aspects of Norene’s tennis life were in attendance. Norene was born in Staffordshire and trained as a P.E. teacher before moving, with her husband Reg, to Purton where she taught at Bradon Forest school. 1,000,000 padel players in Britain
Padel is one of the fastest growing sports in Britain. New figures released by the LTA shows there are now 1,000,000 adults and juniors playing padel across the country at 1825 courts across 551 venues. Their data shows that by the end of 2025, 860,000 adults and juniors had played padel at least once in the previous year, more than doubling participation compared to 2024. This growth has continued through 2026 and the number of individual participants has now hit seven figures. Delta Tennis Centre Schools Roadshow – December 2025
The Delta Tennis Centre Schools Roadshow took place during the week commencing 1st December 2025. Throughout the week, our coaching team visited 10 local schools, engaging with over 1,200 children from Reception to Year 2. This roadshow aligned with an existing delivery week at the centre and was led by the Delta Tennis Centre coaching team. Delivering tennis directly in schools was a fantastic opportunity to introduce the sport to many children who may never have experienced tennis before. NEW WILTSHIRE WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT CENTRE
Rocket Padel has been appointed as the LTA Workforce Development Centre (WDC) for Wiltshire from 1 January 2026, formally known as LTA Coach Development Centres. The LTA WDC’s sit at the heart of Tennis and Padel Coach and Officiating Education in Great Britain and each WDC has the responsibility of running courses in their assigned counties. This includes delivering qualifications (Levels 1-3), workshops, Coach Forums, first aid courses, and safeguarding courses. Hilda Moore BEM – services to tennis
Hilda Moore, of Marlborough Tennis and Wiltshire Tennis Committee member has been awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) in the 2026 New Year’s Honours. Hilda Moore has made a huge contribution to grassroots tennis over 45 years involvement in the sport as a volunteer and coach. After beginning to play tennis in Glasgow, volunteering at Titwood Tennis Club from age 19, she joined Marlborough Tennis Club in England after moving for work. After a number of years involvement with the club, she joined the committee in 2000 and was then elected as Chair in 2002, a role she held for nearly…
