Salisbury Tennis Club was the perfect setting for this years Wiltshire Junior County Championships in August. With just over 100 juniors competing across events from 8u to 18u singles and a selection of doubles it was promising to be a great week of tennis.
The week kicked off with the 8u and 9u players and with a guiding hand we managed to get some super matches underway as we were blessed with beautiful blue skies and the warmth of the sun.
From Monday it was the turn of the older juniors with the 12u and 16u players battling out. For the 12u boys and girls it was not just competing to be the 2023 Wiltshire Champion but also for the opportunity to qualify for the 2023 Babolat Cup at Edgbaston in September.
Over the course of the week a total of 182 matches were played and 31 champions were crowned the title of 2023 WIltshire County Champion on Saturday’s Finals Day.
Alongside the Junior County Championships we were also trialling a couple of new ideas
* An inclusive tennis festival at Riverside Tennis Club
* A Grade 6 matchplay event
Both of these events need to be nurtured over the coming years and whilst we were able to offer the Grade 6 matchplay which was a great success we are hoping in 2024 to attract more participants for the Inclusive Tennis Festival.
The Wiltshire Junior County Championships really is a week where competition is fierce and battle lines are drawn but it is also the friendliest of championships where laughter fills the air and lifelong friendships are made.
